10 Min Breathing 101 Tutorial for Yoga (and Life!) – Diaphragmatic Breathing

Today we're exploring diaphragmatic breathing.

This is the foundation of your breathing for yoga, but it's also something we can use everyday in our lives.

We take more than 20,000 breaths per day, and our breath directly effects the health of our nervous system, organs and immunity. Imagine what kind of healing could be possible if we were able to affect even 10% of these breaths!

REMEMBER THESE WORDS EACH TIME YOU PRACTICE BREATHING:

  • In through the nose
  • Diaphragm moves first
  • Chest second
  • Shoulders don't move
  • Exhale slow and steady

The model I use for diaphragmatic, or functional breathing is from Andy Sabatier, PT, DPT of Academy West (thanks Andy!).
