My Ugly Vase and the Nervous System
Verity Paterson | JAN 30
A few years back, I did a pottery workshop.
Despite the advertisement for 'beginners', gee whiz, it was hard!

I built a "vase" (I put that in quotation marks as you wouldn't know by looking at it).
I kept tacking on additional layers, trying to fix the imperfections, so it kept getting more oblong and unbalanced.
Finally, the workshop was over and it could stand (only just).
And I realised, this is how our nervous system feels when stressors, responsibilities and obligations pile up.

Your mind feels scattered. Or foggy. Or both.
Anxiety goes up and up.
You try to pause and rest, but don't feel 'rested'.
You try adding activities to undo the level of stress growing, but like my vase, the problem gets more unwieldy and out of balance.
You keep pushing through your overwhelm because you can't think clearly enough to work out how to fix it (and sometimes you can't).
You just keep going.
Until something collapses.
You miss an important appointment.
A relationship breaks down.
Your body says NO (hello flu / migraine / debilitating back pain).

Reality is, often our foundation is already shaky with uncertainty and stressors out of our control - part of living in today's world.
So there's very little capacity for us to take anything else on.
But what if we could bolster our foundation so we have more capacity to respond, rather than react?
Yoga strengthens your foundation.
More specifically, restorative yoga and yoga nidra are designed to slow your brain waves and take your nervous system deeper into the parasympathetic 'rest and digest' response.
As our brain waves slow, we feel deeply grounded and supported, whilst also lighter in our heart and mind.
It leads to clearer thinking, and often a realisation, an idea or inspiration.

If you feel fatigued, unable to 'switch off', immune system is down, digestion is upset, hormones are outta whack - this is for you.
Once the body is able to properly rest and the nervous system soothed, the body can replenish its energy.
But sometimes 5 minutes at the end of a vinyasa flow class isn't enough.
If you feel like the year is already racing ahead of you, come along to this event on Sunday 22 February, from 3:30pm - 5pm.
